Manual Handling & Ergonomics

Overview

To course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to identify, assess and control hazards associated with manual handling and computer use in the workplace.
 

Who should attend?

All employees, managers and supervisors.
 

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge about manual handling hazards and tasks in the workplace

  • Discuss the significance of musculo-skeletal injuries (including RSI and computer related issues) to the workforce and greater community

  • Explain requirements under the current legislation and new National Code of Practice to prevent the risks associated with Musculo-Skeletal Disorders (MSD’s) in the workplace

  • Describe the anatomy of the spine and accurately identify on themselves the position of the hip and shoulder joints

  • Set out a model for destructive forces and integrative forces in movements and their effects on soft tissue and bone

  • Establish and describe safe approaches to manual handling movements and computer related movements that minimise the risk of injury

  • Conduct a detailed risk assessment of manual handling and/or computer use using conventional approaches and the new Australian Code of Practice 2005 model

  • Confidently apply new strategies that minimise the risks of injury into their particular work situation

  • Problem solve and find solutions to manual handling and/or computer related issues within their own specific work environment.

Award

Students attending this course will be given a Statement of Attendance.
