Auditor Training - OHS Internal Auditing Skills

Overview

This course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out audits of an organisation’s OHS Management Systems against defined audit standards.

Topics covered include:

The techniques of auditing; attributes and skills of auditors; the conduct of the audit; and the compilation of audit reports; the nature of management systems and the systems approach to occupational health and safety management, continuous improvement using occupational health and safety policies and programs, roles and responsibilities for effective management of occupational health and safety, risk management.
 

Who should attend?

Internal (1st/2nd party) Auditors, Supervisors, Managers, OHS Representatives, or nominated staff who will serve as internal auditors and who need to review the Management System in their organisation’s operations to ensure the system is under control and being maintained and followed as it has been designed and implemented.
 

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • List the types of audits undertaken by organisations

  • Describe the scope of an OHS audit

  • Identify key areas for evaluation of OHS Management Systems

  • Describe the essential components of an audit on specific aspects of OHS Management System

  • Carry out an internal or external audit using a developed audit standard on components of an OHS management system

  • Prepare written reports of the audits for presentation to management

  • Describe the process of management using systems

  • Identify workplace hazards, assess the risk of those hazards and develop control strategies for the risks

  • Identify the major methods used for measurement of OHS performance including positive performance measures.

Training methods and aids

The course will be presented by group discussion, role plays, video, syndicate exercise, action plan development, case studies, audit practical exercises, lecture and report writing. The course is interactive and practical. No assessment will be undertaken for this course.
