Learning & Development Q&A
What is Learning and Development?
Learning and Development is the name the NSCA denotes to our education department that delivers the Diploma of OHS (BSB51307), Diploma of Environmental Sustainability (30584QLD) and Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety (BSB41407).
Two study options are available for each course; blended learning (taught over intensive consecutive workshop days) or distance education . Students are also able to do a combination enrolment by completing some units via distance education and workshops for the other units. Recognition of Prior Learning to recognise previous experience and studies is also available.
Enrolment is available all year round. If you decide to complete a course via distance education, you can start the course at any time. When you enrol with the NSCA Learning and Development department, you can also look forward to support to help you in your studies.
Distance education can also be more convenient as you do not have to travel to classes, compete for car parking, or rush to make it to class on time. Distance education courses have a one-off inclusive enrolment fee, which you can pay up front or per unit, and covers all your learning materials and student support.
What is the difference between blended learning and distance education?
Blended learning means the courses materials such as course readings and case studies are delivered to you in a classroom environment, with materials also available to you online. Assessments are completed post workshop.
With distance education, if you've got access to a computer with an internet connection and an email address, you're ready to go! Course materials are generally available online with some resources sent to you via Australia Post.
Are qualifications identical to those received by blended learning students?
Yes, your qualification will be identical, whether you choose to study as a distance or blended learning student.
Do I need any special equipment or computer software?
No special equipment is required for distance education courses. If you're studying online, you'll need a computer with internet access and an email address. For a smooth learning experience, we recommend the following minimum specifications for your computer system:
-
At least 128MB RAM
-
At least 1GB hard drive
-
56K modem or better
-
Adobe Acrobat Reader available free from the Adobe website
-
CD ROM drive

-

Do I have to attend face to face workshops?
If you’re a distance education student you can complete the entire course by correspondence, meaning there are no workshops, meetings or other activities you need to attend. If you are having difficulty completing your course by distance education, you can switch to becoming a blended learning student and attend workshops.
