Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety (BSB51307)

This course aims to give students:

  • a description of the consequences of exposure to health hazards at work

  • an understanding of the skills required to recognise, evaluate and manage health and safety hazards in the workplace

  • an understanding of the skills required to administer various occupational health and safety functions, planning policy development and ethics.

This course will provide participants with a professional qualification enabling the graduate to fulfil the role of OHS Supervisor or Manager in an organisation.

Entry Requirements 

Entry into the Diploma requires students to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instruction for referencing legislation, preparing reports, completing assessments and essay writing. Preferred pathway into qualification include: achievement of BSB41407 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent, evidence of competency in majority of units for BSB41407 or extensive vocational experience in providing guidance on OHS matters. You will need to complete a Safety Skills Assessment to demonstrate the completion of a Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety or a high level of OHS knowledge and skills in order to be accepted into the course.

International Students:

The NSCA is not a CRICOS registered training organisation, and as a result we are unable to train students on a Student Visa. If you are coming to Australia or currently hold a Visa that is not a Student Visa, please check with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship as to wheather you have study rights attached to your Visa.

National Recognition 

As a Registered Training Organisation, the NSCA will recognise qualifications or statements of attainment issued by another RTO.

Recognition of Prior Learning 

As a Registered Training Organisation, NSCA must offer Recognition of Prior Learning as an assessment method to all students.  RPL recognises the skills, knowledge and experience acquired training, work or life experience.  To apply for RPL, click here to download the RPL Kits.

Course Structure 

The Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety contains eight competencies and are all completed at the pace of the student, with a maximum period of two years. Each unit has specific learning outcomes and is structured for self paced learning. Upon completion of each unit, students are to submit the assessment tasks for marking. To learn more about the units, click here.

Delivery Method 

To provide maximum flexibility to students while they work and study, the NSCA offers two different options for completing the course:

1. Blended learning - Training is conducted over a period of 8 days consisting of two 4 day workshops with a 3 month gap in between. Course assessments are completed post workshop.

2. Distance learning - This web based mode gives the flexibility to complete the course over a time frame that best suits the student. Units are accessed via the NSCA website, with support via telephone and email.

Onsite learning is also available upon application.

Steps to Enrol 

To commence studies in the Diploma of Occupational Health & Safety:

1. Download the Student Handbook.
2. View  the course terms and conditions.
3. Are you a member of the NSCA? Quote your member number on your enrolment form to be eligible for our member rates.  If not, join now.
4. Fill out and submit the Safety Skills Assessment.
5. You will receive email notification if you are authorised to enrol. If authorised, download and complete the Enrolment Form and fax to 07 3255 3281 or email to education@nsca.org.au.
6. Once your enrolment has been processed, you will receive notification of your enrolment.  If you are attending a workshop, you will receive a confirmation letter in the post outlining the workshop venue, date and time.
